Fire Cider for Heart Health

I made another batch of Fire Cider today. It will be ready in 6 weeks.

This immune tonic is special because it also addresses heart health in terms of helping to lower blood pressure, increase athletic performance and improve circulation. Which ingredient is responsible for all of these amazing benefits? BEETS!

Beets have been shown to convert dietary nitrates into nitric oxide which helps lower blood pressure, increase the oxygenation levels in the blood and improve circulation. It has also been noted that people who suffer from Raynaud's Phenomenon/Syndrome are deficient in Nitric Oxide, so beets can also help those with circulation issues that may or may not be associated with autoimmune diseases.

Here is a full list of the ingredients used in this batch of Fire Cider:

1/2 large Beet (see above)

1/2 large Onion - contains vitamin C, Potassium and Quercetin which is a powerful anti - oxidant. It is known to inhibit the growth of bacteria including E Coli and Staph (among others)

1 Grapefruit (juice and pulp) -most recipes call for an orange here, but I am intolerant to orange juice so I used a grapefruit for another source of Vitamin C for immune health

1 lemon (juice of whole lemon and 1/2 lemon sliced into wedges) - Vitamin C and helps with making this tonic more flavorful

1 Jalapeno - Peppers are a catalyst that help all the other herbs work better by increasing circulation. They are also rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin C and Potassium. It also contains the compound Capsaicin which is an excellent pain reliever.

8 Cloves of Garlic - this does more than keep vampires away! It is also antibacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic, antiviral and the Allicin present in garlic is essential for a healthy heart

Turmeric (sliced) - powerful as an anti- inflammatory, reduces pain and inflammation (this is also a blood thinner so don't consume this if you might be having surgery)

Ginger (sliced) - or muscle aches and pain, nausea, it's an anti-inflammatory. This is also a blood thinner, so don't consume this if you might be having surgery.

Horseradish (sliced) - Horseradish is very irritating to the skin and eyes. Be careful. However, it is a very important ingredient as it is antibacterial, helps with circulation and clears mucus.

16 Peppercorns - Black pepper is necessary to help with the absorption of the turmeric

2 large Cinnamon Sticks - anti-oxidant, ant-bacterial, anti-viral, anti-inflammatory, regulates blood sugar

Fresh Oregano - anti-oxidant, anti-bacterial, anti-viral

Fresh Thyme - Powerful anti-viral, anti-bacterial and ant-microbial properties. It is so powerful that many hospitals use Thymol as a disinfectant. I made a cough syrup out of thyme as well.

Fresh Sage - Harvested from my yard. Sage ahs cleaning and purification properties.

You could also add Manuka Honey

Place all ingredients in a jar and fill to the top with Apple Cider Vinegar making sure that everything is completely submerged. Store some place dark (mine is in the cabinet under the kitchen sink). Shake every day for 6 weeks.

Put all of the scraps in a compost bin.
